The most efficient split systems for a cold climate
1,480
models on the register
Short answer
Ranked from the government Energy Rating register (1480 reverse cycle split systems). Highest heating stars (cold zone) first, size by size, so you compare like with like.
Prices are estimates, not quotes (how we estimate them). Rebate rules checked September 2026.
Compare 3 quotes for my houseIn the cold zone of the energy label map, which takes in Canberra, Hobart and Melbourne, a split earns its keep in winter. This ranking sorts every reverse cycle wall split on the government register by its cold-zone heating star rating, size by size, best first.
It covers 1,480 models with a cold-zone heating rating, and the tables show the top ten at each size. Heating stars run much lower than cooling stars, so the numbers look modest. Below is how to read them.

Every model on the Energy Rating register marked available in Australia. Stars are the zoned label for the average climate zone (average zone); indoor noise is the registered sound power level, measured the same way for every model. Installed prices are estimated 2026 supply-and-install ranges, not quotes (how we estimate them); your installer confirms the number. Browse and filter everything in the full catalogue.
How this ranking works
The Zoned Energy Rating Label gives each model a cooling and a heating star rating for the hot, average and cold zones. We rank on cold-zone heating stars, because that is where a cold-climate unit uses most of its power. Only reverse cycle wall splits are included.
Cold-zone heating ratings are low across the board because the label tests heating against long, cold winters where every heat pump works harder. On the register, only 16 of the 1,480 models reach 3.5 stars and 195 reach 3. The most common rating is 2.
Why you should only compare stars within one size
As with cooling, bigger units rate lower, and at the larger sizes the ratings bunch up so tightly that stars barely separate the field.
| Size | Models | Best | Median | Models sharing the top score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5 kW | 247 | 3.5 | 2.5 | 6 |
| 3.5 kW | 242 | 3.0 | 2.5 | 51 |
| 5.0 kW | 307 | 3.0 | 2.0 | 7 |
| 7.1 kW | 207 | 2.5 | 2.0 | 10 |
| 8.0 kW | 147 | 2.0 | 2.0 | 121 |
Premium brands do better here than in the cooling rankings. At 3.5 kW, 28 of the 51 top-rated models are Mitsubishi Electric. At 5 kW, six of the seven are Daikin. At 8 kW the ranking tells you almost nothing, since 121 of 147 models share the top score.
What else matters for heating in a cold climate
- Heating output in kW. Size a cold-climate unit on the heating figure and ask how the output holds up on a frosty morning. Every unit delivers less than its rated output when it's very cold outside.
- Defrost. In frosty areas the outdoor unit periodically defrosts, and heating pauses. Ask the installer how the model you're considering handles it.
- Where the warm air goes. Warm air rises, so a high-wall unit in a room with high ceilings heats the cornices first. A floor console can suit a cold room better.
- Size and insulation. Use the size calculator and fix draughts before you buy a bigger unit.

FAQ
The most efficient split systems for a cold climate: common questions
What is the best reverse cycle air conditioner for heating in Melbourne or Canberra?
Compare cold-zone heating stars within the size you need. At 2.5 kW the best rate 3.5 stars; at 3.5 and 5 kW, 3 stars; at 7.1 kW, 2.5 stars. Then check the heating output in kW, get up to three local quotes and ask each installer how the unit copes with frost.
Why are heating star ratings so low in the cold zone?
The label rates heating against a long, cold winter, where every heat pump works harder and efficiency drops. A 3-star cold-zone heating rating is near the top of the register. Compare within the zone and size. Cooling stars are a different scale.
Is reverse cycle cheaper than gas heating in a cold climate?
Often, especially with an efficient, correctly sized unit. It depends on your gas and electricity prices and how you heat now. Our reverse cycle vs gas heating guide walks through the comparison.
How much does a split system cost installed?
Typically $1,400 to $4,800 supplied and installed in 2026, depending on size and the job. 2.0 kW: $1,400 to $2,400; 2.5 kW: $1,500 to $2,500; 3.5 kW: $1,700 to $2,700; 5.0 kW: $2,100 to $3,300. Pipe runs, a new circuit or a second storey add to it. Get up to three local quotes for your actual job.
Which is the quietest split system?
On the registered indoor sound level, the Samsung AR50F09C1UHN (2.5 kW) is the quietest at 46.9 dB(A). Compare within the same size: bigger units are louder. See the quietest split systems ranking.
Which is the most energy efficient?
For the average climate zone, the AUX CAR3DI (2.6 kW) has the highest cooling rating here at 7 stars. Star ratings on the zoned label run to 10, and a star is worth more in a hot zone than a mild one. For cold-climate heating, the ActronAir WRE-026DS leads at 3.5 stars.
What size split system do I need?
Roughly 2.5 kW for a bedroom, 3.5 kW for a large bedroom or small living room, and 5 to 7.1 kW for open-plan living. West glass and poor insulation push it up. Use the size calculator for your room.
