The most efficient split systems for a average climate
1,481
models on the register
Short answer
Ranked from the government Energy Rating register (1481 reverse cycle split systems). Highest cooling stars (average zone) first, size by size, so you compare like with like.
Prices are estimates, not quotes (how we estimate them). Rebate rules checked September 2026.
Compare 3 quotes for my houseThe average zone on the energy label map takes in Sydney, Adelaide and Perth, and most of the population. This ranking sorts every reverse cycle wall split on the government register by its average-zone cooling star rating, size by size, best first.
It covers 1,481 models, and the tables show the top ten at each size. It is also the rating shown in every model table across this catalogue. Below is how to read it and what it leaves out.

Every model on the Energy Rating register marked available in Australia. Stars are the zoned label for the average climate zone (average zone); indoor noise is the registered sound power level, measured the same way for every model. Installed prices are estimated 2026 supply-and-install ranges, not quotes (how we estimate them); your installer confirms the number. Browse and filter everything in the full catalogue.
How this ranking works
The Zoned Energy Rating Label gives each model a cooling and a heating star rating for three climate zones, on a scale up to 10 stars. We rank on average-zone cooling stars. Only reverse cycle wall splits are included, and where models tie, the order within the tie means nothing.
In an average climate, heating matters too. A Sydney or Adelaide winter puts real hours on a reverse cycle unit, so read the average-zone heating stars on the label as well before you choose.
Why you should only compare stars within one size
Bigger units rate lower. The best 8 kW split rates 4 stars, below the median 2.5 kW unit. Compare only against units of the size you need.
| Size | Models | Best | Median | Lowest | Models sharing the top score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5 kW | 247 | 7.0 | 5.0 | 2.5 | 6 |
| 3.5 kW | 242 | 6.0 | 4.5 | 2.5 | 3 |
| 5.0 kW | 307 | 5.0 | 3.5 | 2.0 | 10 |
| 7.1 kW | 207 | 4.5 | 3.5 | 2.0 | 5 |
| 8.0 kW | 148 | 4.0 | 3.0 | 2.0 | 21 |
Premium badges don't dominate this ranking. At 2.5 kW the top score is shared by Rinnai, AUX, Haier and Hisense; at 5 kW Daikin, Midea, ActronAir, Panasonic and others share it. Paying more for a brand buys service and warranty, which our split system catalogue explains in more detail.
What else matters besides the stars
- The right size. A well-rated unit that is two sizes too big wastes the advantage. Start with the size calculator.
- Heating stars, for the winter half of the year.
- Noise, if it's a bedroom. See the quietest split systems ranking.
- The install. A kinked pipe or a poorly placed outdoor unit costs efficiency the label never sees. That is why you get up to three local quotes and compare what each installer includes.
The running cost calculator turns a star difference into dollars at your tariff.
FAQ
The most efficient split systems for a average climate: common questions
How much does an extra star save on running costs?
It depends on how many hours you run the unit and your electricity price. More stars means less power for the same heating or cooling, and the saving grows with use. Use the running cost calculator with your own numbers, then get up to three local quotes on the models that make the cut.
Which climate zone is Sydney, Perth or Adelaide in?
All three are in the average zone of the Zoned Energy Rating Label. Brisbane and Darwin are in the hot zone, and Canberra, Hobart and Melbourne in the cold zone. The Energy Rating website has the full zone map.
Why does the same air conditioner have different star ratings?
The zoned label rates each model separately for the hot, average and cold zones, and for cooling and heating in each. The unit is the same; the climate it's rated against changes how efficient it is over a year.
How much does a split system cost installed?
Typically $1,400 to $4,800 supplied and installed in 2026, depending on size and the job. 2.0 kW: $1,400 to $2,400; 2.5 kW: $1,500 to $2,500; 3.5 kW: $1,700 to $2,700; 5.0 kW: $2,100 to $3,300. Pipe runs, a new circuit or a second storey add to it. Get up to three local quotes for your actual job.
Which is the quietest split system?
On the registered indoor sound level, the Samsung AR50F09C1UHN (2.5 kW) is the quietest at 46.9 dB(A). Compare within the same size: bigger units are louder. See the quietest split systems ranking.
Which is the most energy efficient?
For the average climate zone, the AUX CAR3DI (2.6 kW) has the highest cooling rating here at 7 stars. Star ratings on the zoned label run to 10, and a star is worth more in a hot zone than a mild one. For cold-climate heating, the ActronAir WRE-026DS leads at 3.5 stars.
What size split system do I need?
Roughly 2.5 kW for a bedroom, 3.5 kW for a large bedroom or small living room, and 5 to 7.1 kW for open-plan living. West glass and poor insulation push it up. Use the size calculator for your room.
