Compare 3 quotes for my houseA ceiling cassette is a split system with the indoor unit set flush into the ceiling, blowing air out on two or four sides. It suits rooms where the walls are all glass, cupboards or heritage plaster, and people who don't want a white box on the wall.
There are 315 cassette models on the government register, from 16 brands, but more than half of them are 9 kW and up and built for shops and offices. For a home, the useful range is the 141 models under 7.5 kW. The tables below list all of them by size, with star ratings from the Energy Rating register and a typical installed price.

Every model on the Energy Rating register marked available in Australia. Stars are the zoned label for the average climate zone (average zone); indoor noise is the registered sound power level, measured the same way for every model. How much does a ceiling cassette air conditioner cost?
More than a wall split of the same size, because the installer has to cut the ceiling, fit the unit between the joists and run a drain that falls properly. A residential cassette from 2.5 to 7.1 kW usually costs about $3,500 to $7,000 installed in 2026, as an estimate for a standard single-storey install. A 7.1 kW unit and an awkward ceiling sit at the top, and big light-commercial cassettes are quoted on site.
| Size | Cassette models | Cassette cooling stars (median, average zone) | Wall split cooling stars (median) | Installed, cassette |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5 kW | 23 | 3.0 | 5.0 | $3,500 to $6,500 |
| 3.5 kW | 21 | 3.0 | 4.5 | $3,500 to $6,500 |
| 5.0 kW | 34 | 2.5 | 3.5 | $3,500 to $6,500 |
| 7.1 kW | 44 | 2.5 | 3.5 | $4,000 to $7,000 |
The star gap is real. A cassette will cost a little more to run than the equivalent wall split, so buy one because the room needs it. An installer can tell you in one visit whether your ceiling will take one, so get up to three local quotes and compare what each finds.
Can a cassette go in my ceiling?
It needs roof or ceiling-cavity space above the room and a joist layout that leaves room for the body. Mitsubishi Electric lists its SLZ-M residential cassette at 245 mm high, which gives you a feel for the depth involved. It also needs a drain route, usually by gravity or with a small pump, and access for the pipes to reach the outdoor unit.
Upstairs rooms under a roof are the easy case. Ground-floor rooms under another floor often can't take one without a bulkhead. Our cassette and floor unit guide covers the alternatives, including bulkhead units.
Which brands make residential cassettes?
Mitsubishi Electric and Daikin make most of them: 54 and 37 of the models under 7.5 kW. Toshiba, Panasonic and Fujitsu follow. Only 72 of the 315 cassettes carry an indoor noise figure on the register, so ask the installer for the manufacturer's sound data if the unit is going over a bed. See Daikin cassettes for one brand's full list.
FAQ
Ceiling cassette air conditioners: common questions
Are ceiling cassette air conditioners any good for homes?
Yes, in the right room. They spread air well from the middle of the ceiling and keep the walls clear. They cost more to install and carry lower star ratings than wall splits of the same size, so they make most sense where a wall unit won't fit or would look wrong.
What's the difference between a cassette and ducted air conditioning?
A cassette conditions one room from a single unit in that room's ceiling. Ducted uses one hidden unit in the roof and ducts to outlets in many rooms. If you want more than three or four rooms done, price ducted or multi-split as well.
Do cassette air conditioners need a condensate pump?
Many do, because the drain has to run up and across the ceiling before it can fall to the outside. Most cassettes are built to take one. It's a common extra, so when you get up to three local quotes, check each one lists it.
How much does a ceiling cassette air conditioner cost installed?
Typically $3,500 to $7,000 supplied and installed in 2026, depending on size and the job. 2.5 kW: $1,500 to $2,500; 3.5 kW: $1,700 to $2,700; 5.0 kW: $2,100 to $3,300; 6.0 kW: $2,400 to $3,600. Pipe runs, a new circuit or a second storey add to it. Get up to three local quotes for your actual job.
Which is the quietest ceiling cassette unit?
On the registered indoor sound level, the Fujitsu AUTH09KVLA (2.5 kW) is the quietest at 47 dB(A). Compare within the same size: bigger units are louder. See the quietest split systems ranking.
Which is the most energy efficient?
For the average climate zone, the Daikin FCA100CVMA (10 kW) has the highest cooling rating here at 4 stars. Star ratings on the zoned label run to 10, and a star is worth more in a hot zone than a mild one. For cold-climate heating, the Daikin FCA50CAVMA leads at 3 stars.
What size split system do I need?
Roughly 2.5 kW for a bedroom, 3.5 kW for a large bedroom or small living room, and 5 to 7.1 kW for open-plan living. West glass and poor insulation push it up. Use the size calculator for your room.
