How much does it cost to have air conditioning installed?
As a 2026 estimate, a split system typically costs $1,500 to $4,800 installed depending on size, and ducted $7,500 to $18,000 depending on the home. Access, pipe runs and electrical work move it within that. See split system costs and ducted costs, or compare up to three quotes for your job.
Why is air conditioning installation so expensive?
You're paying for the unit plus licensed work: a refrigerant-licensed installer, a licensed electrician for the circuit, the pipe run, brackets and removing any old unit. Difficult access such as double brick, a second storey or a long pipe run adds the most. An itemised quote shows where the money goes.
How much do Bunnings and The Good Guys charge to install an air conditioner?
As listed in September 2026, Bunnings installs from $865 (single storey, 4 kW and under) and The Good Guys from $599 to $939 for a back-to-back install under 4 kW, depending on the state. That covers labour for a standard install only. The unit and any extras are on top, so compare the total for the whole job.
What is the best air conditioner brand in Australia?
Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Fujitsu are the brands installers name most, backed by large Australian service networks. Mid-tier brands can be better value, and a correctly sized, well-installed unit matters more than the badge. Compare brands.
What air conditioner brands should I avoid?
Be wary of any brand without an Australian service network or reliable parts supply, and of warranties that depend on a particular installer or yearly servicing you won't keep up. Check the warranty terms before you buy; our brand reviews list them.
How many years should an air conditioner last?
Around 10 to 15 years is common for a serviced split system, though that's a trade rule of thumb rather than an official figure. Solar Victoria says a system over 15 years old can use more than three times the energy of a modern one.
Is 2.5 kW enough for a bedroom?
Usually, for a bedroom up to about 20 square metres with average insulation. A west-facing window, high ceiling or poor insulation can push it to 3.5 kW. The size calculator works it out for your room.
Which is cheaper to run, ducted or split?
A split cooling one room costs less to run than ducted cooling the whole house. Ducted with zoning, running only the rooms you're using, narrows the gap. More in split vs ducted.
Can I get a rebate on air conditioning?
It depends on your state. Victoria's VEU takes up to $5,530 off replacing gas ducted heating, NSW offers up to about $550 to $560 on a typical split, ACT concession card holders can get 50% back up to $2,500, and SA's REPS discounts come through retailers. Queensland, WA, Tasmania and the NT have no state air con rebate in 2026. Check your state.
