Air conditioning installation in Wollongong

Coastal humidity, escarpment weather, and summers that sit on you.

Short answer

Aircon installation in Wollongong costs roughly $1,700 to $4,300 for a split system in 2026, and $9,000 to $16,000 for ducted reverse cycle in a typical three bedroom house. These are estimates for a standard single-storey install, based on nearby Sydney pricing. Access for the outdoor unit moves Wollongong quotes more than the brand does, and the NSW Energy Savings Scheme can take a few hundred dollars off.

Prices are estimates, not quotes (how we estimate them). Rebate rules checked September 2026.

Wollongong access is the thing that blows a cheap quote. A unit that looked simple on the phone can need a crane or a walk through the neighbour's side path. Photos in the notes help.

Few Wollongong installers publish prices, so the ranges here lean on Sydney pricing. Roughly $1,700 to $4,300 installed, bedroom unit to big lounge unit, is the usual guide.

The Illawarra is also two climates in one region. The strip between the escarpment and the sea is damp and mild, and the suburbs out towards Albion Park get cooler nights than the beach. A good installer asks which side of that line you live on before picking a unit.

How much does aircon installation cost in Wollongong?

Estimated installed prices for a standard single-storey job: unit, labour, a short back-to-back pipe run and a basic electrical connection. They are based on nearby Sydney pricing, since few local installers publish price lists. For the detail on what moves a quote, see our split system cost and ducted cost guides.

Why tight side access changes a Wollongong air con quote

A lot of Illawarra houses sit on narrow blocks with a side path barely wider than a wheelie bin. The outdoor unit has to go somewhere it can breathe, drain and be serviced. When the side path will not take it, the options are a back deck, a roof mount, or a wall bracket higher up, and each adds time, brackets or a second installer.

Escarpment suburbs like Thirroul, Austinmer, Keiraville and Mount Ousley add steep driveways and split levels. Two storey pipe runs down the outside wall are common. Send photos of every outside wall with your quote request and you will get a price that survives the site visit.

Fibro homes in Warrawong, Berkeley and Corrimal are light to drill but need care. The federal asbestos safety agency says homes built before 1990 are likely to contain asbestos, so ask the installer how they will test or handle the sheeting before they drill.

Newer estates at Horsley, Calderwood and Shell Cove have wider blocks and clean roofs. They are where ducted jobs run to plan.

What air conditioner suits Wollongong's climate?

The Bureau of Meteorology's Bellambi station, right on the coast, averages a 25°C January maximum and morning humidity of 74 to 76 percent from December to March. At Albion Park, inland of Lake Illawarra, the mean July minimum is 6.5°C against 10.2°C at Bellambi. Summer asks for dehumidifying and winter asks for honest heating output.

  • Beachfront from Thirroul to Kiama: ask for a factory anti-corrosion coating on the outdoor coil and coated fixings.
  • Inland suburbs: compare heating output at 2°C on the Zoned Energy Rating Label, not just the cooling sticker.
  • Use dry mode on sticky nights. It keeps the room comfortable without chasing a low set point.
  • Size for the room. Our size calculator and sizing guide stop the automatic upgrade to a 7 kW unit.

What is the government rebate for air conditioners in Wollongong?

The NSW Energy Savings Scheme. It is an upfront discount on the quote from an installer who offers it, not a claim you lodge later. The NSW Government's indicative amounts are up to $550 for a new 6 kW system and up to $560 when an old air conditioner is replaced with a 6 kW split. You pay a minimum amount yourself, and a home that already has an efficient unit may not qualify.

Your own installer can apply it if they partner with an Accredited Certificate Provider. Ask for it as a separate line on the quote. See our NSW rebate page, or get up to three local quotes with the discount already shown.

When should I book an aircon install in the Illawarra?

Before the end of October if you want a choice of installer and a date that suits you. Diaries fill in November and December, and access-heavy jobs get pushed back first because they take longer. More in when to book.

We introduce you to up to three licensed installers who work your end of the Illawarra. Each quote should itemise the unit, the pipe run, brackets or roof mount, electrical work, old unit removal and the ESS discount, so you know the real number before anyone books a crane.

How much does Bunnings charge to install an air conditioner?

Per room, a split is usually cheaper to run. Ducted can come close if it is zoned and you only run the rooms you are in. See our running cost guide.
