Compare 3 quotes for my houseThere are 1,621 wall-mounted split systems on the government register right now, from 26 brands. Most of them are perfectly good. The job is picking the right size, the right star rating for where you live, and an installer who does the install properly.
Every model is listed below by size, with star ratings and noise from the Energy Rating register, which tests every brand the same way. Use it to get down to one size and two or three models. Then get up to three local quotes and let the installers price the actual wall.

Every model on the Energy Rating register marked available in Australia. Stars are the zoned label for the average climate zone (average zone); indoor noise is the registered sound power level, measured the same way for every model. Installed prices are estimated 2026 supply-and-install ranges, not quotes (how we estimate them); your installer confirms the number. Browse and filter everything in the full catalogue.
How to choose a split system air conditioner
Do it in this order. Each step knocks out most of the 1,621 models before you get to the next one.
- Size. Measure the room and run the size calculator. Oversizing costs more and leaves the room clammy.
- Stars for your climate. The zoned label gives three ratings. Brisbane and Darwin should read the hot zone, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth the average zone, and Canberra, Hobart and Melbourne the cold-zone heating stars.
- Noise. Compare the register's indoor dB(A) figure within one size. A bedroom unit is worth a few extra dollars for a few fewer decibels.
- Brand and service. Who fixes it in year eight matters more than the badge on day one.
- The installed price. Three itemised quotes for the same size tell you more than any sticker.
What size split system do I need for my room?
Most Australian installers work from about 120 watts of cooling per square metre in a standard insulated room, then add for western sun, poor insulation and high ceilings. The areas below match our sizing guide.
| Size | Standard room up to | Room with big west glass | Installed, typical | Models on the register |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5 kW | about 20 m² | about 18 m² | $1,500 to $2,500 | 268 |
| 3.5 kW | about 29 m² | about 25 m² | $1,700 to $2,700 | 265 |
| 5.0 kW | about 42 m² | about 35 m² | $2,100 to $3,300 | 342 |
| 7.1 kW | about 59 m² | about 50 m² | $2,600 to $3,900 | 229 |
| 8.0 kW | about 67 m² | about 56 m² | $3,000 to $4,300 | 159 |
Each size has its own page: 2.5 kW, 3.5 kW, 5 kW, 7 kW and 8 kW.
Do premium brands have better star ratings?
On the label, no. We grouped the reverse cycle models by the brand tiers on our brand pages and took the middle value for each. The cheaper badges match or beat the premium ones on cooling stars at every common size.
| Brand tier | 2.5 kW cooling stars (average zone) | 2.5 kW indoor dB(A) | 7.1 kW cooling stars | 7.1 kW indoor dB(A) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium (Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, ActronAir) | 4.5 | 54.5 | 3.0 | 61.0 |
| Mid (Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Toshiba, Hitachi, Carrier, Rinnai) | 4.5 | 55.3 | 3.5 | 64.0 |
| Value (Haier, Hisense, Gree, Midea, TCL, Teco, Bonaire) | 5.0 | 54.6 | 3.5 | 63.8 |
| Other budget badges (Kogan, Hyundai, Braemar, Westinghouse and others) | 5.0 | 53.9 | 3.5 | 63.1 |
What the premium price buys is the dealer network, parts availability and a five-year warranty, which is what our Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric pages come down to. The premium tier is also quieter at 7.1 kW, by about three decibels at the median. A value brand is a sensible buy for a rental or a spare room.
Inverter, R32 and reverse cycle: what is standard now
R32 refrigerant is on 1,613 of the 1,621 models, so it is standard. Reverse cycle is on 91 percent. The 140 cooling-only models make sense only in a part of the country that never gets cold. Inverter compressors are the norm on current splits from the major brands. If a quote doesn't say inverter, ask.
What drives the installed price of a split system
- Size, first. Bigger units cost more and from about 7 kW often want their own circuit.
- The pipe run. Back to back is cheapest; every extra metre, a second storey or a roof run adds labour.
- The wall. Double brick and concrete take longer to core.
- Electrical work. A dedicated circuit is about $300 to $900, and a switchboard upgrade $1,000 to $3,500.
- Removing the old unit, which needs a licensed technician to recover the gas.
Our split system cost guide has the detail. When you're ready, compare up to three local quotes on the same size and check each against what a good quote includes.
FAQ
Split system air conditioners: common questions
What is the best split system brand in Australia?
There isn't one best brand on the numbers. Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric are the safe premium picks for their service networks and five-year warranties, but value brands match them on star ratings at most sizes. Pick the size and rating first, then choose between brands on price and who services them near you.
Is a higher star rating worth paying for?
Usually yes, if you run the unit a lot. Each extra star means less power for the same output, and the saving grows with the hours you use it. Check the stars for your own climate zone, and use the running cost calculator to see what the difference is worth.
Why do some split systems from different brands have identical specs?
Several budget badges register the same capacity, star ratings and noise figures down to the decimal point. That usually means the same unit from the same factory sold under different names. That's no problem in itself. It does mean the badge tells you less than the price tag suggests.
How much does a split system air conditioner cost installed?
Typically $1,400 to $4,800 supplied and installed in 2026, depending on size and the job. 2.0 kW: $1,400 to $2,400; 2.5 kW: $1,500 to $2,500; 3.5 kW: $1,700 to $2,700; 5.0 kW: $2,100 to $3,300. Pipe runs, a new circuit or a second storey add to it. Get up to three local quotes for your actual job.
Which is the quietest split system unit?
On the registered indoor sound level, the Samsung AR50F09C1UHN (2.5 kW) is the quietest at 46.9 dB(A). Compare within the same size: bigger units are louder. See the quietest split systems ranking.
Which is the most energy efficient?
For the average climate zone, the AUX CAR3DI (2.6 kW) has the highest cooling rating here at 7 stars. Star ratings on the zoned label run to 10, and a star is worth more in a hot zone than a mild one. For cold-climate heating, the ActronAir WRE-026DS leads at 3.5 stars.
What size split system do I need?
Roughly 2.5 kW for a bedroom, 3.5 kW for a large bedroom or small living room, and 5 to 7.1 kW for open-plan living. West glass and poor insulation push it up. Use the size calculator for your room.
