The most efficient split systems for a hot climate
1,481
models on the register
Short answer
Ranked from the government Energy Rating register (1481 reverse cycle split systems). Highest cooling stars (hot zone) first, size by size, so you compare like with like.
Prices are estimates, not quotes (how we estimate them). Rebate rules checked September 2026.
Compare 3 quotes for my houseIf you live in the hot zone of the energy label map, which takes in places like Brisbane and Darwin, your split spends most of its life cooling. This ranking sorts every reverse cycle wall split on the government register by its hot-zone cooling star rating, size by size, best first.
It covers 1,481 models. The tables show the top ten at each size. Below is how the ranking works, why a star counts for more in a hot climate, and what to check besides the stars.

Every model on the Energy Rating register marked available in Australia. Stars are the zoned label for the average climate zone (average zone); indoor noise is the registered sound power level, measured the same way for every model. Installed prices are estimated 2026 supply-and-install ranges, not quotes (how we estimate them); your installer confirms the number. Browse and filter everything in the full catalogue.
How this ranking works
Every air conditioner sold in Australia carries the Zoned Energy Rating Label. It splits the country into hot, average and cold zones and gives each model a cooling and a heating star rating for each one, on a scale up to 10 stars. The same unit rates differently in each zone because the label weights its performance by that climate's hours of heating and cooling.
We rank on the hot-zone cooling stars because that is where a hot-climate unit uses most of its power. Only reverse cycle wall splits are included. Where models tie, the order within the tie means nothing; compare them on noise and price instead.
Why you should only compare stars within one size
Star ratings fall as units get bigger. A 2.5 kW split with 5.5 hot-zone stars is ordinary; a 7.1 kW with 5.5 is the best at its size. So the ranking runs size by size.
| Size | Models | Best | Median | Lowest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5 kW | 247 | 10 | 5.5 | 3.0 |
| 3.5 kW | 242 | 8.5 | 5.0 | 3.0 |
| 5.0 kW | 307 | 6.0 | 4.0 | 2.5 |
| 7.1 kW | 207 | 5.5 | 3.5 | 2.5 |
| 8.0 kW | 148 | 4.5 | 3.5 | 2.5 |
The very top scores at 2.5 and 3.5 kW belong to value brands, Haier and Hisense among them. Our brand pages cover what you trade for the lower price, which is mostly the size of the service network.
What else matters in a hot climate
- Size it for the afternoon. West-facing glass in a hot climate adds roughly a fifth to the load. Use the size calculator with your climate set to hot.
- Humidity. In Brisbane and further north, a correctly sized unit on dry mode does more for comfort than a bigger one blasting cold air. Oversized units short-cycle and leave the room clammy.
- Running hours. The more you run it, the more each star is worth. The running cost calculator shows what a star is worth at your tariff.
- Outdoor unit placement. Out of the afternoon sun and with room to breathe, it works less hard.
Shortlist two or three models at your size, then get up to three local quotes and ask each installer to price the one you want.
FAQ
The most efficient split systems for a hot climate: common questions
What is a good star rating for an air conditioner in Queensland?
Compare within the size you need, using the hot-zone cooling stars. At 2.5 kW the median is 5.5 and the best reach 10. At 7.1 kW the median is 3.5 and the best rate 5.5. Anything well above the median for its size is a good result.
Should I buy a cooling-only air conditioner in a hot climate?
Only if you never need heating. Cooling-only units are left out of this ranking. Even in Brisbane, a reverse cycle unit is handy on winter mornings, and it costs little extra.
Is a 10 star air conditioner worth it?
Only two models on the register reach 10 hot-zone cooling stars, both 2.5 kW. If one suits your room and has local service, it will cost less to run than an average unit. Check its noise and heating ratings too, and get up to three local quotes with a well-rated premium model priced alongside it.
How much does a split system cost installed?
Typically $1,400 to $4,800 supplied and installed in 2026, depending on size and the job. 2.0 kW: $1,400 to $2,400; 2.5 kW: $1,500 to $2,500; 3.5 kW: $1,700 to $2,700; 5.0 kW: $2,100 to $3,300. Pipe runs, a new circuit or a second storey add to it. Get up to three local quotes for your actual job.
Which is the quietest split system?
On the registered indoor sound level, the Samsung AR50F09C1UHN (2.5 kW) is the quietest at 46.9 dB(A). Compare within the same size: bigger units are louder. See the quietest split systems ranking.
Which is the most energy efficient?
For the average climate zone, the AUX CAR3DI (2.6 kW) has the highest cooling rating here at 7 stars. Star ratings on the zoned label run to 10, and a star is worth more in a hot zone than a mild one. For cold-climate heating, the ActronAir WRE-026DS leads at 3.5 stars.
What size split system do I need?
Roughly 2.5 kW for a bedroom, 3.5 kW for a large bedroom or small living room, and 5 to 7.1 kW for open-plan living. West glass and poor insulation push it up. Use the size calculator for your room.
