A floor console is a split system whose indoor unit sits low on the wall or on the floor, usually under a window or in an old fireplace. An under-ceiling unit hangs flat against the ceiling. A floor/ceiling console can be mounted either way. They run off the same kind of outdoor unit as a wall split.

The register lists 256 of them: 36 floor consoles, 39 floor/ceiling units and 181 under-ceiling units. The floor consoles are the home units. Most under-ceiling models are 9 kW and up and built for cafes and offices. Everything is listed below by size, with star ratings, noise and typical installed prices.

Why choose a floor console air conditioner?

Heating. Warm air rises, so a unit that puts it out at floor level warms the part of the room you sit in. That makes floor consoles popular in Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne and the tablelands, and in rooms with high ceilings where a wall head would heat the cornices.

They also solve awkward rooms: a wall of windows with only a low sill, a heritage room where nobody wants a box above the picture rail, or a fireplace that is never lit. The catch is that they take floor space, and furniture can't sit in front of them.

Reverse cycle floor consoles, September 2026. The rest are 6 and 7 kW units.

On the label, floor consoles rate about the same as wall splits for cold-zone heating and lower for cooling. Daikin makes 12 of the 36 and Mitsubishi Electric 11, with Fujitsu, Toshiba, Hitachi, Haier and Rinnai making the rest.

How much does a floor console cost installed?

A floor console usually costs $2,800 to $4,800 installed in 2026. That is at or above the price of a wall split of the same size, because the units cost more and the pipe route from floor level can be fiddly, especially when the unit is recessed into a fireplace or a wall. Under-ceiling units in larger sizes are often three phase and are usually quoted on site.

Our cassette and floor unit guide compares these with ceiling cassettes and bulkhead units. When you've settled on a type, get up to three local quotes so an installer can check the pipe route.

What to check before you buy a console

  • The heating output in kW as well as the cooling. For a cold room, size on the heating number.
  • Where the pipes and drain go. Out through the wall behind is easiest; under a timber floor adds labour.
  • Clearance in front. A couch against the grille strangles the airflow.
  • For under-ceiling units, whether the model is single or three phase.

Then compare quotes from up to three licensed installers on the same model.

FAQ

Floor and ceiling console air conditioners: common questions

Are floor standing air conditioners better for heating?

They put warm air out at floor level where you sit, which most people find more comfortable than heat from a high-wall unit. On the register their cold-zone heating stars are similar to wall splits, so the gain is in comfort. Efficiency is about the same.

Can a floor console go in a fireplace?

Often, yes. Several models are designed to be recessed, and a disused fireplace gives an easy route for the pipes. The installer needs to check the chimney is sealed and the drain can fall to the outside.

What is an under-ceiling air conditioner?

An indoor unit that mounts flat against the ceiling and throws air across the room. It suits long rooms and commercial spaces. Most on the register are 9 kW or bigger, so they turn up in homes mainly for large open-plan areas.

How much does a floor and ceiling console air conditioner cost installed?

Typically $2,800 to $4,800 supplied and installed in 2026, depending on size and the job. 2.5 kW: $1,500 to $2,500; 3.5 kW: $1,700 to $2,700; 5.0 kW: $2,100 to $3,300; 6.0 kW: $2,400 to $3,600. Pipe runs, a new circuit or a second storey add to it. Get up to three local quotes for your actual job.

Which is the quietest floor and ceiling console unit?

On the registered indoor sound level, the Daikin FVXM25YVMA (2.5 kW) is the quietest at 50 dB(A). Compare within the same size: bigger units are louder. See the quietest split systems ranking.

Which is the most energy efficient?

For the average climate zone, the Fujitsu AGTG09KVCA (2.5 kW) has the highest cooling rating here at 5 stars. Star ratings on the zoned label run to 10, and a star is worth more in a hot zone than a mild one. For cold-climate heating, the Daikin FVXM25YVMA leads at 2.5 stars.

What size split system do I need?

Roughly 2.5 kW for a bedroom, 3.5 kW for a large bedroom or small living room, and 5 to 7.1 kW for open-plan living. West glass and poor insulation push it up. Use the size calculator for your room.
