TAS
Tasmania reverse cycle rebate 2026
Short answer
Tasmania has no government rebate or interest-free loan for a household heat pump in 2026. The Energy Saver Loan Scheme, which offered 0% loans of $500 to $10,000, closed on 1 September 2025, so the saving now comes from buying a cold-climate unit at a fair installed price.
Prices are estimates, not quotes (how we estimate them). Rebate rules checked September 2026.
Compare 3 quotes for my houseTasmania does not run a household rebate that moves a quote the way VEU does, and the interest-free loans are gone. Buy a cold-climate reverse cycle. Enjoy the summer as a side effect.
Cheap coastal splits struggle at 2 degrees and wet. If the installer cannot talk heating output in winter, keep walking.
Is there a heat pump rebate in Tasmania in 2026?
No. The Tasmanian Government's Energy Saver Loan Scheme was the main help for heat pumps, and it closed at 11:59 pm on Monday 1 September 2025. The federal energy.gov.au rebate directory, checked on 29 September 2026, lists no current Tasmanian household scheme for heating and cooling.
| Program | Status | What it offered | How it was applied |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy Saver Loan Scheme (ReCFIT, via Brighte) | Closed 1 September 2025 | 0% loans of $500 to $10,000, repaid fortnightly over 1 to 3 years, for heat pumps and other upgrades | Loan through Brighte |
| Household Energy Upgrades Fund (federal) | Open through participating lenders | Discounted green finance for energy upgrades | Through your lender |
| State household heat pump rebate | None in 2026 | n/a | n/a |
So the installed price is the whole cost. Get up to three local quotes that state the unit's heating output at low temperatures, not just its nominal kW.
What happened to the Energy Saver Loan Scheme?
It ran out of money. ReCFIT closed it on 1 September 2025, applications in the last few days were only approved if funding was left, and approved loans had to be installed by 30 November 2025. There is no replacement scheme listed for households.
If you had a loan approved and the install fell through, talk to Brighte directly about where it stands.
Buying a heat pump for a Tasmanian winter
In Hobart or Launceston a reverse cycle is a heater that also cools, so buy it that way. The ACT Government, which deals with the same frosty mornings in Canberra, says a reverse cycle turns one unit of electricity into three to six units of heat, and that good systems keep working at minus 10 degrees. Efficiency falls as it gets colder, so the model matters.
- Ask for the rated heating capacity at low outdoor temperatures, and compare that between quotes.
- For splits, ask about the H2 rating on the energy label. It indicates heating performance in colder conditions.
- Read the cold-zone heating figures on the Zoned Energy Rating Label, which rates each unit separately for hot, average and cold climates.
- Think about the outdoor unit's spot. Defrost cycles drip water, and a unit tucked in a frost hollow works harder.
- Size for the coldest morning, not the warmest afternoon. The size calculator is a start.
See our Hobart price guide for local install ranges. A 2.5 kW bedroom split is usually $1,500 to $2,500 installed and a 5 to 7 kW living-room unit $2,100 to $3,900 (estimates for a standard install). Get a quote for your house and your winter.
Paying for a heat pump without the Tasmanian loan
The federal Household Energy Upgrades Fund works through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation and participating lenders to offer discounted green loans for energy upgrades. It is available to households with or without a mortgage and to rental property owners, subject to the lender's criteria. It is cheaper finance, not free money.
Whatever you finance it with, get the price right first. A cheap loan on an inflated quote is still an inflated quote. Start with an itemised local quote.
