South Australia reverse cycle rebate 2026 (REPS)

SA's Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme discounts efficient reverse cycle through retailers and activity providers. No fixed amount. Here's how to get it on a quote.

Short answer

South Australia's Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS) covers efficient split, ducted and multi-split reverse cycle air conditioners in 2026, running to at least the end of 2030. It is a discount applied by the activity provider when the job is done, and the regulator does not set or publish the amount, so the only way to know your number is a quote.

Prices are estimates, not quotes (how we estimate them). Rebate rules checked September 2026.

South Australia does not copy Victorian Energy Upgrades, and it doesn't publish a discount table. It does have a state scheme that covers reverse cycle. The Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme makes energy retailers deliver efficiency upgrades, and efficient air conditioning is on the list. How much comes off is up to whoever delivers it.

A lot of Adelaide jobs are evaporative replacements. Reverse cycle heats. Evaporative does not. That is the conversation, not a rebate brochure.

Is there a government rebate for air conditioning in South Australia?

Yes, in the form of REPS. It is a South Australian Government scheme that began on 1 January 2021 and runs in two five-year stages, 2021 to 2025 and 2026 to 2030. Energy retailers above a size threshold get annual targets and meet them by delivering approved upgrades to homes and businesses, directly or through contracted activity providers.

The regulator is blunt about it: REPS is not a cash rebate scheme and the government does not pay you. The incentive shows up as a discounted product or installation, applied when the work is done.

Activity list from the Department for Energy and Mining's REPS activity specifications, varied from 1 January 2026, checked 29 September 2026. ESCOSA does not set or publish REPS prices. A minimum co-payment of $33 including GST applies where a co-payment is charged, except for priority group and concession households.

No published figure means no benchmark, so comparing quotes matters more here than anywhere else. Get up to three local quotes and ask for the REPS discount as a separate line.

Who is eligible for REPS air conditioning discounts?

All South Australian households and businesses can take part, and participation is voluntary. You do not need to be a customer of the retailer whose target the job counts towards. Each activity has its own property rules, and most can only be done once at the same address.

Retailers also have targets for a priority group, and that is where the deepest discounts tend to go. ESCOSA lists priority group households as including:

  • Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card holders, including Low Income Health Care Card.
  • TPI Gold, War Widows Gold or Gold Repatriation Health Card (EDA) holders.
  • Households receiving the South Australian energy bill concession.
  • Renters paying $500 a week or less.
  • Households in a retailer hardship program or retailer payment plan.
  • Households referred by a registered financial counsellor.

Renters can be eligible, but an air conditioner is fixed to the property, so you need the landlord's written permission first.

How do I get the REPS discount on a reverse cycle?

You contact an activity provider offering the air conditioning activity, they assess eligibility, and the discount is applied when they deliver the job. There is no form to lodge afterwards.

Before or at the time of the work, the provider must give you a REPS information statement showing the activity, the final total cost including any co-payment, and your complaint rights. Anyone doing the work must wear ID with their name, photo, company and ABN.

Availability is uneven. Providers choose which activities to offer, some pause once they hit their annual target, and regional areas can mean wait lists or travel charges. ESCOSA's own advice is to compare REPS offers with quotes from local installers, because a non-REPS job can sometimes be cheaper or sooner. Our Adelaide price guide shows what a fair install costs before any discount.

Evaporative or reverse cycle: which gets the rebate in Adelaide?

Both can, as separate REPS activities. The difference is what you get for the money. Evaporative cooling is cheap to run and does nothing in July. A reverse cycle heats and cools, and it holds a set temperature on the muggy days when an evaporative unit just pushes damp air around.

If you are replacing an evaporative system and heat with gas, a ducted reverse cycle does both jobs. It costs more to install, typically estimated at $8,000 to $15,000 for a three-bedroom house, and it is one system to service instead of two. Our reverse cycle vs evaporative guide goes through the trade-off, and a quote will price the ducting you can reuse and the ducting you can't.

What to watch for with "free" or cheap REPS air conditioning offers

  • The unit model. Ask for the exact model number, then check its heating and cooling capacity suits the room.
  • The install. A discounted unit with a bare-minimum install (short pipe run, no new circuit, no removal of the old unit) can turn into variations on the day.
  • The final total. The REPS information statement must show it, including any co-payment. Compare that figure, not the discount.
  • Sizing. An undersized split in a west-facing Adelaide living room will run flat out all afternoon. Use the size calculator before you accept a model.

The safest check on any REPS offer is an itemised local quote for the same size of unit, so you can see what the discount is really worth.

FAQ

South Australia rebate questions

What government rebates are available in South Australia for air conditioning?

The Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme. It discounts efficient reverse cycle splits, ducted and multi-split systems through energy retailers and activity providers. The amount is not fixed or published, so you need a quote to see it.

How much is the REPS air conditioner rebate?

ESCOSA does not set or publish REPS prices, and costs vary by provider, activity and location. Where a co-payment applies, the minimum is $33 including GST, and priority group and concession households are exempt from that minimum.

Do I need to be with a particular energy retailer to get REPS?

No. You can use REPS through any obliged retailer or activity provider, regardless of who supplies your power. Participation is voluntary.

Are there rebates for heat pumps in South Australia?

Reverse cycle air conditioners are heat pumps, and they are covered by REPS. Heat pump hot water is a separate REPS activity under water heating.

Can renters in SA get a REPS air conditioner?

Renters can be eligible, and renters paying $500 a week or less count as priority group. An air conditioner is fixed to the property, so written landlord permission is needed before any work.

Will the Australian government offer energy relief in 2026?

Not as an automatic bill credit. The federal Energy Bill Relief Fund ended on 31 December 2025. Concession card holders should check the South Australian energy bill concession through their retailer.
