Compare 3 quotes for my houseA 2.5 kW split is the bedroom unit. It cools a standard insulated room of up to about 20 m², or about 18 m² with big west-facing windows. That covers most bedrooms, a study or a small closed lounge.
There are 268 of them on the government register from 26 brands, which makes this one of the most crowded sizes on the market. The good news is that a 2.5 kW is where the best star ratings and the quietest units live. The tables below list every one, and the notes here cover what to prioritise at this size.

Is a 2.5 kW split system big enough for my room?
For a normal 10 to 16 m² bedroom, yes, with room to spare. Past about 20 m², or in a west-facing room with poor insulation, step up to a 3.5 kW. It usually costs only a few hundred dollars more.
| Size | Standard room up to | Installed, typical | Cooling stars, average zone (median) | Indoor dB(A) (median) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.0 kW | about 16 m² | $1,500 to $2,500 | 4.0 | 52.4 |
| 2.5 kW | about 20 m² | $1,500 to $2,500 | 5.0 | 54.5 |
| 3.5 kW | about 29 m² | $1,700 to $2,700 | 4.5 | 57.0 |
The 2.0 kW saves very little and rates lower on the label, so it only makes sense for a genuinely small room. Check your room in the size calculator.
What to prioritise in a 2.5 kW split
- Noise, first. This unit runs all night beside your bed. The register's indoor figure runs from 46.9 dB(A) to 66 dB(A) at this size, with a median of 54.5. Anything in the low fifties is quiet.
- Stars for your climate. The median reverse cycle 2.5 kW rates 5 cooling stars in the average zone and the best rate 7. In Canberra, Hobart or Melbourne read the cold-zone heating stars instead; the best 2.5 kW units rate 3.5.
- Reverse cycle. 247 of the 268 heat as well as cool. Buy one of those.
- Outdoor noise, if the outdoor unit sits near your window or the neighbours'. The median at this size is 58.3 dB(A).

How much does a 2.5 kW split system cost installed?
Usually about $1,500 to $2,500 supplied and installed in 2026, on a standard single-storey back-to-back job. A value brand on an easy wall sits at the bottom. A premium brand such as Daikin or Mitsubishi Electric tends to land in the upper half. A long pipe run, a second storey, double brick or a new circuit adds to it.
The cheapest quote is not always the cheapest job. Our split system cost guide lists what a standard install leaves out. Get up to three local quotes for the room, itemised, and compare them line by line.
FAQ
2.5 kW split systems: common questions
Can a 2.5 kW air conditioner cool a living room?
Only a small, closed one under about 20 m². In an open-plan living area it will run flat out on a hot afternoon and still lose. Measure the whole open space and use a 5 or 7.1 kW unit there.
Why do some 2.5 kW split systems say 2.6 or 2.7 kW?
Brands rate capacity slightly differently, so the 2.5 kW class on the register runs from 2.4 to 2.8 kW. The difference between them is small. Compare star ratings and noise instead.
Is 2.5 kW enough for heating a bedroom in winter?
For a normal insulated bedroom, yes. Most 2.5 kW reverse cycle units put out about 3 kW or more of heat. In a cold climate, compare the cold-zone heating stars and when you get up to three local quotes, ask each installer how the unit performs on frosty mornings.
How much does a 2.5 kW split system cost installed?
Typically $1,500 to $2,500 supplied and installed in 2026, depending on size and the job. 2.5 kW: $1,500 to $2,500. Pipe runs, a new circuit or a second storey add to it. Get up to three local quotes for your actual job.
Which is the quietest 2.5 kW split systems?
On the registered indoor sound level, the Samsung AR50F09C1UHN (2.5 kW) is the quietest at 46.9 dB(A). Compare within the same size: bigger units are louder. See the quietest split systems ranking.
Which is the most energy efficient?
For the average climate zone, the AUX CAR3DI (2.6 kW) has the highest cooling rating here at 7 stars. Star ratings on the zoned label run to 10, and a star is worth more in a hot zone than a mild one. For cold-climate heating, the ActronAir WRE-026DS leads at 3.5 stars.
What size split system do I need?
Roughly 2.5 kW for a bedroom, 3.5 kW for a large bedroom or small living room, and 5 to 7.1 kW for open-plan living. West glass and poor insulation push it up. Use the size calculator for your room.
