When is the best time to install air conditioning in Australia?

Autumn and late winter. In the southern states that means March to May, and again August to September. Demand is low, installers will come out to measure properly, and you get time to put two or three quotes side by side.

The logic is plain supply and demand. The number of licensed installers in your area does not change between July and January. The number of people ringing them does. When everyone's unit fails in the same heatwave, the crews that are any good are booked, and the ones with same-day availability are available for a reason.

The north runs on a different clock. In Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and further north, the cooling season starts earlier and ends later, so the quiet window is shorter. May to August is the time to book there. In Canberra, Hobart and the colder parts of Victoria, heating is the bigger job, and the rush comes with the first cold snap in May as well as with summer.

Is air conditioning cheaper to install in winter?

Often, a little, and mostly in ways that do not show up as a headline discount. An installer with a quiet week is more likely to sharpen a price, include the isolator or the wall bracket without argument, or throw in a longer pipe run. In January the same installer has no reason to.

The installed price ranges on this site hold year round: a 2.5 kW split is usually $1,500 to $2,500 installed in 2026, a 5 to 7 kW living-room split $2,100 to $3,900, and ducted for a typical home $7,500 to $18,000, all on a standard install. The bigger saving from booking early is not the price. It is getting the right size, the right brand and a proper install from a crew that is not doing six jobs a day. A rushed install is how you get a drain that drips down the wall in February.

When do air conditioners go on sale?

Retailers run their biggest air conditioner sales around end of financial year in June and Black Friday in late November. Winter clearance deals on last season's models are also common.

Two cautions. First, a retail sale is usually a discount on the box. The installation is often a separate price, and a "standard install" package typically covers a back-to-back install with a short pipe run on a single storey wall. Anything else, a longer run, a second storey, double brick, a new circuit or taking the old unit away, is extra. Ask for the full installed price before you celebrate the box price.

Second, Black Friday sits right at the start of the pre-summer rush. You can buy the unit cheaply in late November and still wait weeks for someone to fit it. If you buy in a sale, book the installer the same day.

The pre-summer rush: what happens if you wait

Most people decide on air conditioning the week it gets hot. That is the worst week to decide.

• Site visits get skipped. A busy installer quotes from photos or a phone call, and sizing becomes a guess. Our sizing guide explains why that matters.
• Stock gets tight. The popular 2.5 and 7.1 kW models from the big brands can run short in a long heatwave, and you end up with whatever is on the truck.
• Roof work slows. Ducted crews start early and stop when roof spaces get dangerously hot, which stretches a two day job.
• You lose leverage. Nobody negotiates when they have ten more calls waiting.

If you know you want air conditioning before next summer, the latest sensible time to start is September. Get the quotes in, pick the installer, and put the install in the diary for October at the latest. Start with a local quote now.

Timing the Victorian and NSW rebates

In Victoria, the Victorian Energy Upgrades program gives a discount on eligible high-efficiency reverse cycle air conditioners, with the largest discounts for removing or replacing a ducted gas heater. The discount is applied at the point of sale by an accredited provider, so there is no claim form. If you are replacing an existing heating or cooling system, energy.vic.gov.au says the system being replaced must be more than 2 years old.

Timing matters in two ways. First, the discount comes from certificates whose value moves, and program rules get updated from time to time. Get the discount written on the quote as a line item and lock it before you pay a deposit. Second, if you are replacing gas ducted heating, do it in summer or early autumn. Doing it in June means a cold house while the old heater comes out, and the accredited installers are busiest exactly then.

New South Wales runs the Energy Savings Scheme, which can take something off a high-efficiency reverse cycle install through an accredited provider. How long does an air conditioning installation take?

If your air conditioner has already died in summer

Ask for a local installer here and say it is a breakdown. Many keep slots for emergency work, and a family with a dead unit in a 40 degree week goes ahead of someone upgrading a working one.

Get a repair opinion before you agree to a replacement, unless the unit is well past 10 to 15 years old. A failed capacitor or a blocked drain is a service call, not a new system. If you do have to replace in a rush, do not skip the basics. Ask for the rated kW, the full installed price, the warranty on parts and labour, and the installer's ARCtick licence number.
