Air conditioning installation in Geelong

Wind off the bay, hot inland days, and the same VEU rules as the rest of Victoria.

Short answer

A split system in Geelong usually costs about $1,800 to $4,300 installed in 2026, and ducted reverse cycle for a typical three bedroom home about $10,000 to $16,500 before rebate. These are estimates for a standard single-storey install, with ducted based on Melbourne pricing. Victorian Energy Upgrades can take up to $5,530 off when a ducted gas heater is replaced with an efficient ducted reverse cycle system, applied on the quote.

Prices are estimates, not quotes (how we estimate them). Rebate rules checked September 2026.

Geelong gets the Victorian rebate and Melbourne-level heat a few days a year. If the gas ducted is 20 years old, this is the year to look at reverse cycle. The discount is on the invoice.

New estates toward Armstrong Creek often go ducted from day one. Older Newtown weatherboards usually start with a lounge split and stop there. That is fine.

The thing most Geelong buyers get wrong is buying for summer. You will run the unit for heat far more hours than for cooling, so the heating output on a cold, windy July night is the number that decides whether you like it.

How much does a split system cost in Geelong?

Estimated installed prices for a standard single-storey job, before any VEU discount, including the unit, labour, a short back-to-back pipe run and a basic electrical connection. Split prices are based on advertised Geelong installer prices. Ducted and multi-head bands are based on Melbourne pricing, since few Geelong installers publish them. The national detail sits in our split system cost and ducted cost guides.

How much is the VEU air conditioning rebate in Geelong?

Geelong gets exactly the same Victorian Energy Upgrades discounts as Melbourne. The size of the discount depends on what you are removing and what goes in. These are the Victorian Government's indicative household figures, checked September 2026.

The rules that matter: the unit must be a VEU-approved high-efficiency reverse cycle model with at least a five-year warranty, anything you replace must be more than two years old, and only an accredited provider (or an installer partnered with one) can apply the discount. What air conditioner is best for Geelong winters?

The Bureau of Meteorology's Breakwater station at the Geelong Racecourse averages a 14.4°C July maximum and a 6.4°C July minimum. At Avalon, the July mean minimum is 5.2°C. January averages 26°C, with hot northerly days on top of that. This is a heating climate with a cooling season, and the south-westerly off the bay makes it feel colder than the thermometer says.

  • Compare heating output on the Zoned Energy Rating Label, which lists heating capacity at 7°C and at 2°C.
  • Size for heating. A lounge that is comfortable in January can still be under-heated in July by a unit sized only for cooling. Use the size calculator or our sizing guide.
  • Replacing gas ducted, insist on zoning. Heating the whole house to warm the lounge is how ducted gets a reputation for big bills.
  • Ocean Grove, Torquay and Portarlington properties near the water should ask for a corrosion-protected outdoor coil.

Replacing gas ducted heating in Belmont, Highton and Corio

The 60s and 70s brick homes in Belmont, Highton, Grovedale and Corio are where most VEU gas ducted replacements happen. Many still run the original floor or ceiling ducts. Sometimes they can be reused. Often they are undersized for reverse cycle airflow, or leaking, so ask the installer to inspect them rather than assume. That inspection is part of any local quote we arrange.

Newtown and Geelong West weatherboards usually have tight roofs and period ceilings. One or two splits are the common answer there, and a room gas heater replaced by a split can still attract a discount of $630 to $1,610.

Armstrong Creek, Lara and Mount Duneed estates mostly have accessible roofs and wide west-facing living rooms. Ducted jobs there tend to run to plan.

When is the best time to install air con in Geelong?

Autumn, if you are replacing gas ducted, so the new system is ready for winter and the VEU paperwork is not rushed. For cooling, book before November. Our timing guide covers the busy months, and the quote form runs the rebate check by postcode.

We introduce you to up to three licensed installers who work with a VEU accredited provider in the Geelong region. Each quote should itemise the unit, ducts or heads, zoning, electrical work, removal of the old heater and the VEU discount, so the number you sign is the number you pay.
