What size Daikin ducted system do I need?

Ducted is sized on the conditioned area of the house, with zoning so you never run it all at full load. As a rough guide, a single storey three bedroom home needs 10 to 14 kW and a four bedroom home 14 to 17 kW.

What to check on a Daikin ducted quote

  • The range. Premium Inverter, Inverter and Slim-Line all appear on quotes as "Daikin ducted". Ask for the range name and full indoor and outdoor model numbers.
  • Single or three phase. 37 of Daikin's 144 ducted models need three-phase power, including every one above 18 kW. Most homes are single phase.
  • Refrigerant. 12 Daikin ducted models, all 15.5 kW and up, still use R410A. Ask whether an R32 option is available.
  • Zones and controller. Four to six zones is normal, controlled through Airbase or a third-party system. Keep the main bedroom off the living zone.
  • Stars. Daikin's ducted units sit around the middle of the ducted field: the median is 2.5 cooling stars in the 10 to 14 kW class, the same as the register as a whole. Zoning does more for your bills than a half-star.

How much does Daikin ducted air conditioning cost?

A single storey three bedroom home with sensible zoning usually lands between about $8,000 and $15,000 installed on a standard job. Four bedroom homes run about $10,000 to $17,000, and two storey homes or tight roofs go higher. Daikin is a common spec in new builds, and its dealer network quotes competitively against ActronAir; see our ActronAir vs Daikin comparison.

The ducted cost guide covers what moves the price. Then get up to three local quotes and compare the zone plans and model numbers as closely as the totals.

FAQ

Daikin ducted: common questions

What is the Daikin Slim-Line ducted system?

It is Daikin's low-profile ducted range for homes with tight ceiling or roof space. Daikin lists it from 5.0 to 14 kW. If an installer says your roof is too tight for standard ducted, ask whether a slim unit fits.

Is Daikin ducted better than ActronAir?

Both are premium ducted brands with strong dealer networks. On the register, ActronAir's ducted units rate a little higher at the median, 2.5 cooling stars in the average zone against Daikin's 2.0. The installer's design, zoning and service matter more than either figure, so get up to three local quotes and ask for both brands if you can.

Can I control Daikin ducted from my phone?

Yes. Daikin's Airbase controller handles zoning and app control on its residential ducted systems. Check the controller is on the quote as its own line.

How much does a Daikin ducted cost installed?

Typically $6,500 to $20,000 supplied and installed in 2026, depending on size and the job. Under 10 kW: $6,500 to $10,500; 10 to 14 kW: $8,000 to $15,000; 14 to 18 kW: $10,000 to $17,000; 18 kW and up: $12,000 to $20,000. Pipe runs, a new circuit or a second storey add to it. Get up to three local quotes for your actual job.

Which is the most energy efficient?

For the average climate zone, the Daikin FDYA71AV1 (7.1 kW) has the highest cooling rating here at 3 stars. Star ratings on the zoned label run to 10, and a star is worth more in a hot zone than a mild one. For cold-climate heating, the Daikin FBA50BAVMA leads at 2.5 stars.

What size ducted system do I need?

Most three-bedroom homes land around 10 to 14 kW and four-bedroom homes 14 to 18 kW, but insulation, ceiling height and zoning change it. Our sizing guide explains how installers work it out.
