Best for

Buyers who want Japanese engineering and a long warranty at a price under the big three.

Toshiba was selling inverter air conditioners before most Australians had heard the word. The company's Australian site says it was the first to put inverter technology into an air conditioner, in 1981. Today the brand belongs to Carrier, the American heating and cooling group, which bought Toshiba's stake in the joint venture in 2022.

In Australia, Toshiba is distributed by AHIC (Australia) Pty Ltd from Clayton in Melbourne, the same company that handles Carrier. It is a trade brand. You buy it through air conditioning specialists, not off a showroom wall.

A bedroom-size Toshiba split usually installs for about $1,700 to $2,300 in 2026, and a 7 kW living-room unit for about $2,700 to $3,700. That lands beside Panasonic and a step under Fujitsu and Daikin for similar capacity.

The headline is the warranty. Toshiba gives seven years parts and labour on residential units bought from 1 May 2020, which is longer than the five years Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu and Panasonic offer as standard.

What holds Toshiba back is reach, not the hardware. Fewer installers stock it, so regional service is patchier than the big three. In the capitals that rarely matters. Outside them, ask who the nearest authorised service agent is before you sign, or get up to three local quotes and we will put the question to the installers for you.

Is Toshiba a good air conditioner brand in Australia?

Yes. Toshiba is a genuine Japanese engineering brand with a long inverter history, now owned by one of the world's largest heating and cooling groups. The units are well regarded by the installers who fit them, and the seven-year warranty says the distributor is confident in them.

The reason it is not a household name here is marketing spend and dealer count, not quality. That makes it a value play in the middle tier, provided there is a service agent near you. Get up to three local quotes to find out.

Toshiba warranty in Australia

AHIC's warranty policy gives seven years parts and labour for residential and light commercial units bought from 1 May 2020. Units bought before that carry five years.

  • The unit must be installed by a qualified installer, and a certificate of compliance may be required.
  • Warranty repairs are done by AHIC's authorised service representatives, not any technician you choose.
  • Report a defect within 30 days of noticing it, with proof of purchase.
  • Excluded: second-hand units, caravans and boats, and damage from weather or salt.
  • The installation itself is the installer's responsibility, not Toshiba's. Use a licensed installer with an ARCtick licence.

Toshiba ranges: Seiya, Shorai Edge, Haori and ducted

The current Australian wall-split range runs from the Seiya Classic, Seiya and Seiya Plus through to the Shorai Edge and the Haori, whose fabric-covered front is designed to be looked at. There is an R32 multi-split system and two ducted families: Digital Inverter and Super Digital Inverter.

For most homes the Seiya is the value point. Spend up to Shorai Edge for the main living area or a bedroom where noise matters, and look at Haori only if the wall unit is part of the room's design.

Where it earns the money

  • Seven-year parts and labour warranty on residential units bought since May 2020
  • Decades of inverter engineering; Toshiba says it put the first inverter into an air conditioner in 1981
  • Full residential range: wall splits, multi-split and ducted
  • Sold through specialist dealers, so the person quoting it usually services it too

Watch-outs before you sign

  • Thin marketing presence means fewer installers carry it than Daikin or Fujitsu. Check local service
  • Warranty work must be done by the distributor's authorised service agents, and defects need reporting within 30 days
  • Salt and weather damage are excluded, so coastal installs need a proper spot and a corrosion-protected coil
  • Wi-Fi modules carry only one year of cover

Our verdict

An underrated mid-tier buy. If a Toshiba dealer is local and the quote sits under Fujitsu for the same capacity, the seven-year warranty makes it easy to say yes.

FAQ

Toshiba questions

Is Toshiba a good air conditioner brand?

Yes. Toshiba is a Japanese brand with a long inverter history, now owned by Carrier, and it carries a seven-year parts and labour warranty in Australia. Its weakness is a smaller dealer network, so check who services it near you.

Who owns Toshiba air conditioning?

Carrier Global Corporation. Carrier bought Toshiba's stake in their air conditioning joint venture in 2022, and the company was renamed Carrier Japan Corporation in 2024 while keeping Toshiba as a product brand. In Australia, AHIC (Australia) Pty Ltd distributes Toshiba.

How long is the Toshiba air conditioner warranty in Australia?

Seven years parts and labour for residential units bought from 1 May 2020, and five years before that. Repairs go through AHIC's authorised service agents, and you need proof of purchase and a qualified installer.

What do the symbols on a Toshiba air conditioner remote mean?

They vary by model, so use the owner's manual for your model number, which Toshiba publishes on its Australian site. The common ones are mode (cool, heat, dry, fan, auto), fan speed, swing, timer and quiet or eco modes. If the remote is for a unit over ten years old, that is often a good moment to price a replacement.

How much does a Toshiba split system cost installed?

Around $1,700 to $2,300 for a 2.5 kW bedroom unit in 2026, and $2,700 to $3,700 for a 7 kW living-room unit, on a standard install. Premium series sit at the top of those bands.
